Thanks for the information. I knew the land came from the Burnes family and I also read that John initially spent a lot of time reclaiming land owned by Marcia from people who illegally tried to sell it.
John was a family man - helping his brothers many times in need as their father Peter did until his death in 1904. So there must have been a falling out between Marcia or maybe James and the other Burnes for him to not have helped them.
I have not seen the will yet, but I have picked up a few pieces scattered about from various sources. I think Cornelius was the executor as he had to defend John's estate from some lady claiming to be John's second wife. This lady, Mary Ann Connor, had no proof of a marriage and apparently tried to bribe someone to support her. I think this lady is bogus.
I have not heard of Mrs Phillip before, and this is the first I have seen of her full name. Worthingon and Phillip are not names that I have seen as related to the Van Nesses, but it is still possible.
Cornelius died in 1852 in Philadelphia while returning to NY from DC, where he was tending to John's estate. I'm sure this complicated everything and I expect that this could be a mess in the courts. It is unclear to me where John's estate ended up - I do not know the Phillip name either, I'm not sure if William had any children(I guess so because he died in 1826) and it is unclear where Cornelius' share went - 4 of his children were still alive then.
I would be interested in seeing the will and I am still trying to find the probate for both John and Cornelius. Yes, their house was supposedly very elaborate for the time as also was their burial site.
