My granfather was James Edward VanNess son of William Ivy VanNess. William Ivy was born 1861, Marion Co., SC. His father William born NJ was killed by bushwackers right aft W I was born. Mother of W I was Sarah/ Sallie SIms or Simmons Born 1831 N C died 1919 Robertson Co., TX. Sarah lost everything after he was killed, the story goes she gave him to a "Old Man Hall" thought they would be good to him, "the Old Lady" did not like him and was mean. He ran away 14 yrs old when she was going to beat him, made his way to Texas, eventually Robertson County, bought land 1888, and went back ? and got his mother. Married Indiana Josephine Adams 1886 Madison- Leon Co TX. The family said he had 2 sisters, one died aft married. Supposedly Old Man Hall was in Tennessee they thought. After several years all I have is 1860 Marion Co. SC census w William abt 30yo and Sarah w the 2 girls born NC SC. The names are hard to read but Henrrietta or Harrietta, and Mephronia ?. Indexes interpreted it as Saphronia but is definitely not comparing writing on the page. I have looked extensively cannot find him nor the rest of the family until 1900 Robertson Co TX. I have not been able to find the parents before 1860 either.
William I would be 9 yo 1870.
Do you have any info on my lost Van Ness family?
