Gold Family of Rockbridge

I am researching the Gold family of Rockbridge. Earliest found is James whose father could have been Thomas. My line:Thomas>James>John>Alfred. James supposed to have married Elizabeth McDowell. Even though McDowell well published family, cannot find a marriage, who her parents were. Anybody have any insight?
