Years ago, I received a letter from a gentleman in the southern part of Germany, who told me that Seyfried was a Name conferred by nobility on a person to use as a name at christening of his son. The person was called a "keeper of the peace" or "defender of the people"--an act of bravery.
Then, he told me that after awhile people named that began to use it as a surname in place of their real surnames and that the Seyfried name had been given to different families all over Germany and Austria. Hope you can find some of your relatives. Our name is spelled with a y instead of an I. My father-in-law's parents came from Germany. Anton Seyfried was born in the Wittenburg area. My father-in-law was born in Edwardsville, Illinois, USA.
Iris Seyfried
