Ross O. Riedel Ross O. Riedel, 94, formerly of 7671 Marion-Melmore Road, Sycamore, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at Fairhaven Community, Upper Sandusky. He was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, to Wooster and Verna Ellen (Ohl) Riedel. On Sept. 24, 1939, he married Emma Louise (Steinhilber), and she died June 22, 1990. He also married Bonnie Wolford, and they later divorced. He is survived by children Dana (Jean) Riedel of Sycamore, Paula (Dale) Kirkpatrick of Newberry Springs, Calif., Van (Cathy) Riedel of Crestline and Anita (David) Wurm of Bucyrus; grandchildren Angela Haake, Monte Riedel, Christopher and Corky Kirkpatrick, Gayle and Conner Riedel, Mackenzie Harris, and David, Cecilia and Gus Wurm; great-grandchildren Ysabella and Kason Wurm, and Victoria and Amber Kirkpatrick; a brother, Dale Riedel of Bucyrus; and sister, Marjorie Bookmyer of Sycamore. He was preceded in death by brothers, Virgil and Robert Riedel, and sisters, Cora Swerline and Onolea Riedel. Mr. Riedel was a retired dairy farmer and did custom farming in the neighborhood. He also worked at Webster Manufacturing and American Standard — both in Tiffin — at Swan Rubber in Bucyrus and Wyandot Dolomite in Carey, and he also did carpentry work. He was a World War II Army veteran, where he received medals including the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with German Clasp, Honorable Service lapel button-WWII and the Marksman Badge with carbin bar with rifle bar. Mr. Riedel was a 60-year member of the Plankton United Methodist Church where he worked as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher, as a member of the church choir, on the board of trustees, administrative council and drove the church bus to pick up people in the area. He also was a caretaker for the Benton Cemetery as well as the Crawford County Humane Society. He was a secretary of the Sunday school, member of Epworth League of Churches; a member of A.S.C.S.; a Crawford County Republican Central Committee member; a member of Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250; member of Gideon International; former Texas Township trustee; former member of the Crawford County Fair Board; a church league softball pitcher; a former pitcher with Sycamore PeeWee Baseball program; and once ran for Crawford County commissioner. He loved to pitch horseshoes and bowl, and he was an avid fan for the Ohio State University Buckeyes, the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns. Mr. Riedel attended Red College. Visitation is 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. The funeral will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at the funeral home ,with the Rev. Ric Harvel officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Military rites will be performed graveside by the Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250.
