Thanks Robert for your post. I hope someone will be able to answer my question as to how to get the birth certificate. I am even interested in employing someone to do the research for me, if need be.

Robert: as per your question, I will let the Polish authorities decide about the ethnic question because according to what I have read even a birth certificate and a polish surname does not gaurantee citizenship and by extension a passport. So it seems to be not an easily answerable question.
