Hi Mary, It appears that the proper Polish spelling for Pogozelski is POGORZELSKI. The family seems to have dropped the “R” from their surname over time. However, there are early U.S. records that show that Anthony spelled his surname POGORZELSKI. Also, his wife has had three (3) different spellings for her given name in the U.S. census records. In the 1910 U.S. census, she is indexed on Ancesrty.com as “W Wladyslaus Pogorelski” living at 8107 Hoffman Street in Cleveland Ward 24, Cuyahoga County, OH. In the 1920 U.S. census, she is indexed on Ancesrty.com as Theresa Pogorzelski living in Rural Leroy Township Lake County, OH. In the 1930 U.S. census, she is indexed on Ancesrty.com as Wanda “Pogozelski” living in Rural Leroy Township Lake County, OH. Wladyslawa is the Polish given name for Charlotte/Lottie. There are WW I and WW II Draft Registration Cards for Anthony in which he spells his surname Pogorzelski. According to the WW I Draft Registration Card, Anton Pogorzelski was born in “Olszewska” Russia/Poland on January 13, 1889. At the time of his registration, he was living at 6204 Fullerton in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH with his wife and children. He was employed as a machine helper. According to the WW II Draft Registration Card, Anton Pogorzelski was born in “Sadkowo” Poland on June 13, 1881. At the time of his registration, he was living at RFD 2 in Painsville OH. He was self-employed on Taylor Road in the town of Leroy, Lake County, OH. His signatures appear the same although they are 25 years apart. I will email you copies of the documents discussed above.
