Origins of the Name
Posted by: Warren W. Updike Date: November 06, 1999 at 19:47:07

My source, 20 years ago, was a history of the Op den Dyck family published in 1890. I found this book in the Bucks County, Pa, Historical society Library. The author, an Updike, traced his family to one emmigrant landing in Dutch Neck, Long Island, 1635. Many of his decendents settled in the Mercer County, NJ area.

The name, I am told, in Dutch means "up on the dike." Was perverted in early American english to Up den Dyck, Opdyke, Updyke, Updike, etc.

I recently learned of a line of Op den Dyck in Prussia/Germany. Seems they settled in the New Amsterdam, NY area and up into Boston. The NJ Updikes were mostly farmers in the Princeton and Newhope, NJ area.

I am the 4th generation of my family with only one surviving male. My Great Great Grandfather, William G. Updike of Lambertville, NJ was one of several brothers. I don't currently have the details. I do remember from the book mentioned above that there were extensive family trees with large numbers of Updike progeny in the middle and late 19th century.

Anyone interested in more details, please e-mail me directly - wupdike@hotmail.com
