Hi Maureen,
Noticed your inquiry: he is my Great Great Grandfather also. It is difficult to go earlier into our ancestors than Thomas and Isabella, but the following may be of interest to you:-
According to the book "Discharged In New Zealand - 1840-1870' by H. & L. Hughes, he enlisted in the 65th Regiment Of Foot in Banbridge, County Down on 5th December 1854 at the age of 18 years. He was born in Rathriland (Rathfiland). Private Thomas (Regimental No. 3421) was discharged in Otahuhu on 31st August 1865 after completion of Engagement. He left London in the ship 'Lancashire Witch on 17th April 1856, for New Zealand. This differs slightly from records obtained from the 'British War Office: Returns: Muster Rolls and Pay Lists', which says he enlisted at Dunbridge, Hampshire.
I have much information of him, his wife and many of his descendants if you wish to contact me. Regards, Ralph O'Neill
