Hugh O'Neil 1832 Ireland - lived in Whitby and Pocklington, Yorkshire

Hi all ... please help!

Hugh O'Neil is our brick wall. Hugh is the father of Margaret (Margriet) O'Neil, our direct ancestor. We have them on the 1881 census in Pocklington, Yorkshire.

In 1881, Hugh is living with his two daughters: Margaret and Sarah (Shair). He is listed as a hawker and the girls as agricultural labourers. Both girls are down as being born in Torquay - in 1864 (Margaret) and 1862 (Sarah). Hugh is recorded as being born about 1832 in Ireland.

The girls stick, roughly, to these dates in subsequent censuses and to the place of birth. However, we are unable to find any proof that they were, in fact, born in Devonshire.

We also believe we have found the trio in 1871 in Whitby, Yorkshire.

What information we have has been put on our website - www.spencer.1afm.com/page35.html - but we are unable to unearth where in Ireland Hugh was from, where the girls were born and the name of their mother - who must have died between 1864 and 1871.

If anyone has any information we would be most appreciative.

Regards,
Shelagh and Cara Bouwer
Johannesburg, South Africa
