Thomas J. Ogle (1780-1862) GA, SC, and TN

Does anyone know what the "J" in Thomas J. Ogle's name stands for? I know that the Ogle men in TN began using their fathers' first names to provide a middle initial to keep them all straight. (They tended to use the same first names, and this could be confusing. This practice started about the second generation that the Ogles were in TN. However, Thomas J was born before that practice began, and his father's name was William, so where did the "J" come from? I'd be grateful for any help.
