Hi

Trying to trace the source of the 'Ogle' in the name 'Lewis Ogle Brown' (c1857-1944), who was a brother of my Great-Great Grandfather William Brown.

Lewis' parents were Thomas Brown (c1825-bef.1871) and Elizabeth Eltis (c.1826, South Shields, Durham), so no obvious connection to the mother's maiden name as I'd first suspected!

Lewis' siblings were

John George Brown (17 Sep 1849 - ) North Seaton, Northumberland
William Brown (c.1851 - 18 Dec 1889) North Seaton, Northumberland
Thomas Eltis Brown (c.1854 - ) North Seaton, Northumberland
Mary Brown (c.1860 - ) Newgiggin By The Sea, Northumberland
Elizabeth Brown (c.1863 - ) Newgiggin By The Sea, Northumberland

Spouse was Margaret Mabon of Backworth, Northumberland(c.1864-1892).

Census records for Lewis Ogle Brown:-
1871 Census = 'Blacksmith' (aged 14 - North Seaton Colliery)
1881 Census = 'Labourer at Colliery' (North Seaton)
1891 Census = 'Coal Miner' (North Seaton)
1901 Census = 'Gardener' (Horton, Cowpen)

In both the 1891 and 1901 census the family had Ann Mabon living with them (born c.1842). In 1891 she is listed as 'Aunt' - so clearly an aunt of Margaret Mabon, Lewis' wife.

1881 Census shows Elizabeth Brown at Nth Seaton (correct age) with Son listed as 'Ogle Brown' (no 'Lewis') but his age is correct & sister Elizabeth with correct age also. I suspect therefore he was known locally as 'Ogle Brown'.

Love to know if there's a connection here into the Ogle family and would be very happy to hear from any Ogle historians who can help.

My best guess is that the connection exists on Lewis' Mother's side of the family (Elizabeth Eltis), because I know from searches on Ancestry.com that there's a 'Lewis Ogle' who died in her birthplace, South Shields, in 1842.

Also, the 1861 Census has another Lewis Ogle (c.1828) who was a "boat builder & book agent", living with his family also in South Shields. His wife was Margaret E. Ogle.
