Julia A. Pierce, mother to Clara E. Smith versus Julia A. Martin

Recently I was searching for information about my great grandmother, Clara E. Smith who was born on Dec. 26, 1861 in Scio, New York. Her parents were Julia A. and Smauel C. Smith. She married John L. Bates on July 12, 1887 in Jamestown, New York at the First Methodist Church. They were the first couple married there. As of the 1880 and then the 1900 census Clara's Parents, Julia A. & Samuel C. were still living in Jamestown, New York and my family confirms this. The census also says the maiden name for Julia was Pierce and Julia and her husband were born in Rhode Island. Recently I came across a family tree online. It says Julia A.'s last name was Martin and she married a second time to a Alexander Swanick in Illinois which I know my julia always lived in Jamestown. In the 1880 & 1881 census there was even a servant in the houshold by the name of Harry Roberts. With some help, I found that Julia Martin was born in Ireland. Some where a long the line I think the two Julias were merged into one person.

Does anyone have any more information that might clear up this confusion of the two Julias or where to look for the information? I sure would appreciate it.
