That Daniel McKay is most likely the same as your Donald McKay. Donald is the Gaelic version of Daniel, just as Ian is the equivalent of John, or Gilbert of Christopher, or Finley for Philip. Other common nicknames include "Ann" for Nancy, Sandy for Alexander, Nepsey for Annabella.
I note that Donald and Winnifred had children named Phillip, Christian, Alexander and Farquhar--all the names you might expect. Phillip for Winnie's grandfather McRae, Christian for her grandmother McRae, Alexander for her father and Farquhar for her uncle, Farquhar A. McRae, who also came to Alabama.
