I have collected information on Annie Neville Mays that I would like to share:
She was the daughter of William N. Mays of Amherst VA, who was deceased by 1870, and Mary Elizabeth Roane (1837-1886). Bettie Roane, who died Aug. 2, 1886 in Baltimore, MD, was the daughter of John S. Roane and Harriet M. John, born circa 1811, died of heart failure around 1869 in Richmond VA. He apparently was a partner in a clothing business that had stores in Richmond and Petersburg. Harriet (1813-14 Dec 1892), a widow, is living in Petersburg for the 1870 census with daughter Bettie Maise, also a widow, and Bettie's children: Kattie L, 8; Annie, 7; Sydney F., 6; and William N., 3. Harriet died Dec. 14, 1892 in Richmond, VA.
Annie Neville Mays married first to an Abraham Demarest Wool on 2 Jun 1884; second to Samuel Alexander Hinton 0n 29 Sept 1897 in Petersburg. The couple had a daughter Catherine L the following year. Samuel Hinton had two sons from a previous marriage to Ellen Ross: Erasmus Gill Hinton and Harley Ross Hinton. Samuel Hinton, a doctor with a practice in Petersburg, died 16 May 1912 in Louisiana. Annie Neville Mays Hinton received a pension for Samuel Hinton's service in the Army.
Samuel Hinton was the son of Erasmus Gill Hinton and Jane Griffin Stith. Erasmus Hinton was the son of John Hinton and Martha Newsom Gill. John Hinton was the son of Samuel Hinton and Katharine, all of Petersbug VA.
John S. Roane was a grandson of Judge Spencer Roane who married Anne Henry.
I would welcome any clarification, additions or corrections to this. I am trying to find the parents of William N. Mays, who was born around 1835 in Amherst VA. I believe he is a grandson of Joseph Mays Jr. and wife Jane Edmonds Of Amherst, possibly a son of Samuel Mays and wife Mary Gregory Mays. This couple had a son William I have yet to track.
