I really appreciate the time you have taken to look up information. Now, just to confuse things, the site I found that had the Leonard Gay Mays letters also shows some of the family lines. The children attributed previously to Benjamin Mays and Martha Frankie Dale are attributed on this site to John Mandeville Mays and a Fullbright woman. The children were Benjamin(M), Byrd(F), Rachel Elvira(F, b. 1838), Milton(M), Willaim (M, b. 1844), Thomas Livy, John Horace, Charles Edward, Emma, Laura, Fannie, Martha, and Elizabeth. Since they are listed in sequence of birth, and Byrd turned out to be female, the list just doesn't match the 1840 census, which showed 4 male children. With conflicting family data, the only hard data is the 1840 census. Either not all the male children were listed, or the children were not Benjamin Mays' and Martha Frankie Dale's. Only two male children are shown born by the 1840 census. Too many years of auditing, the numbers just have to add up for me.
Looking at a TN historical/genealogical site, I found a biography of Benjamin Mays, written some years back. It didn't have the names of his children with first wife Martha Frankie Dale, but said he had remarried after her death, and listed the names of those children. They didn't match the list I had previously mentioned, either.
