I gave the information about the family of Benjamin Mays (b 1806) on Jan 21 (msg 2188) in reply to your message (2186) of Jan 19. If the names and dates of birth of his children that were included in that book are correct (and, barring serious typographical errors I would assume they are, since they were taken from a document handwritten by Benjamin Mays himself), they do not match with the names and birthdates of the two brothers you are researching. I am familiar with the letter from Leonard Mays. He was speculating in it on possible family relationships. In the 1970s I checked out what he said about Benjamin Mays of Nebraska and determined that he was mistaken. If more details on that are wanted I can dig them up. Now, I'm not saying your men aren't descendants of John B. and Rachel Gay Mays. I'm just saying that I'm fairly certain they can't be the children of Benjamin. And I'm positive they aren't the sons of James Gay Mays or John Mandeville Mays. As for Alphonso, I don't think they can be his sons, based on the available information, but I'm not as sure of that. Then there is the fifth son, whose name has never appeared in any 19th century documents that I know of. I don't know what happened to him. However, there are also all the brothers of John B. Mays as possibilities. I don't have the papers with me at the moment to check their names, but John B. was the eldest about a dozen or so children. His younger brothers might easily have had children the same age as his (John B.'s) grandchildren. I think the names are posted somewhere; if not, I can provide them. I truly sympathize with you about accessing this information. The internet has made it SO much easier for people than it used to be, but there is still a long way to go. My almost-90-year-old aunt has similar difficulties, but is fortunate enough to have me to help her out! Notify Administrator about this message?
