Hello again,
This is what I have to answer your question about James Virgil Mays and the middle name Burton. The information comes from a Google internet site I found while searching Robert Mays and Elizabeth Bolling. The site heading sayss "This is a FREE website! Robert MAYS updated 01/07/2006. At the bottom it says: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lotsofgenealogy/Robert Mays.html-69K.

1. Robert Mays and Elizabeth Rolling:
2a. Benjamin Mays and Susannah Brown
3a. John Bolling Mays and Rachel Gay
3b. Robert Mays
3c. Elizabeth Mays and William Slaven
3d. Grayanna Dianna Mays married Sterling Tally
3e. William Mays married ? Roby
3f. Larkin Benjamin Mays
3g. Absolom Mays
3h. Levi Mays married Elizabeth Leach
3i. Nancy D. Mays
3j. Susanna Mays married Yearby Vaugh
----> 3k. JAMES VIRGIL MAYS, B. 1794, D. 1862
3l. Martha Patsy Mays
3m. Winston Mays, b. 1795
3n. Jacob Brown mays, b. 1794 married Lettie Vaugh.

The decendants listed for Benjamin Mays and Martha Frankie Dale seem to be missing some male children. According to the lists, their children were: Benjamin, Byrd, Rachel Elvira b. 1838, Milton, William b. 1844, Thomas Livy, John Horace, Charles Edward, Emma, Laura, Fannie, Martha, and Elizabeth. Only Benjamin and Byrd were born before the 1840 census; however, the census shows 4 boy children. There were 2 in the 0-5 age group, 1 in the 6-10 age group, and 1 in the 10-15 age group. Seems to be two young male children missing from the lists!
The LDS Family Search site has info on a John Daniel Mays, b. 1831 in White County, TN and the provider of the info listed his parents as Benjamin Mays and Martha Frankie Dale. My great-grandfather John Jackson Mays' Union Army pension records lists his birthplace as 1832 White County, TN. Thomas Daniel Mays' Union Army pension records also list his birthplace as 1835 White County, TN.
The only Mays listed for White County TN in the 1840 census was Benjamin Mays.
The 1830 census showed 2 other Mays the right age group (20-30): John Mays and Elijah Mays. Also showed a Robert Mays age 50-60 with young daughters but no sons. By the 1840 census only Benjamin Mays was left. I would like to find out who the missing male children were. John Daniel Mays' descendant listed him as one of them. Who was the other one?
No info was listed for the 2nd son Byrd; did he die in childhood and possibly wasn't around for the 1840 census?
The LDS site showed ancestry for Robert Mays (Elizabeth Bolling) as well as other related lines. I noticed the middle name Burton for several male Mays. My grandmother Lillian Maye Mays, b. 1892 in Pocahontas, Randolph Co., AR, had two May brothers: Charles Burton Mays and JAMES VIRGIL MAYS [same name as 3k above). I would really like to know what you think of all this.
