Most of my information about Benjamin Mays, son of John B. Mays and Rachel Gay, comes from a book I found at the Texas State Library in Austin: "The Mays Family," by S.E. Mays.
I cannot lay my hands on the title page just at the moment, so I can't tell you the publication date, but to the best of my recollection (this was 25 years ago) it was a privately printed book (PROBABLY mimeographed).
The book lists the following children for Benjamin Mays (taken from "an original record written by B. Mays ca 1855"):
James Gay Mays, b 5 Sep 1829
John Daniel Mays, b 30 April 1831
Martha Eveline Mays, b 5 May 1833
William Carroll Mays, b 5 Mar 1836
Elisha Mays, b 30 Apr 1839
Rachel Mays, b 14 Jul 1841
(the above are children of Martha Frankey Dale, 1810-1848)
Andrew Gambel Mays, b 24 May 1852
Jacob Anderson Mays, b 4 Mar 1854
(children of Rebecca Anderson)
Another source lists a third child by Rebecca: Sophrona Mays, b 29 Jan 1856
Benjamin had a brother, Alphonso, who died (probably in a cholera epidemic) in 1847. Among his children were a son named Thomas Garland and another named John Wyatt. I don't have the dates of their births; or, I can't locate them quickly.
These names don't seem to me to match up with your information, but I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that John B. Mays had a brother who also moved to Tennessee. It may be that HE is the ancestor you should be looking for. And then there's also that fifth son of John B., whose name I don't rightly know ...
