John B. Mays, born 1778 Amherst Co, VA, the son of Benjamin Mays and wife Susannah Brown Mays, died 1830 Deer Fork River TN He married Rachel Gay in Iredell Co NC. Children: 1.James Gay Mays born 1803 in NC died 1878 in Pinson, Madison Co TN Married C. Ann Fulbright and Cyrena Jane Weaver; 2. Benjamin Mays born 2 Aug 1806 NC married Martha "Frankey" Dale and Rebecca Anderson; 3. Alphonso Mays born 8 Apr 1808. Died 20 Aug 1847. Married Ruanna Fulbright on 25 Sep 1832. 4. Jacob "Zene" Mays born about 1809; 5. John Mandeville "Jack" Mays born Jan. 16, 1810, married Sarah Fulbright. He died Jun 20, 1887 in Rusk Co., Texas. I have a copy of a letter writte by Leonard G. Mays(the grandson of James Gay Mays) to his cousins Charles Edward Mays, Thomas L. Mays and John Horace Mays, all of Texas, in which he discusses his great grandfather's marriage to Rachel Gay. He said they first moved to the middle part of NC near the Cuberland Mountains, then headed further west in a homemade wooden axle wagon. The family left James Gay, who was a teacher in his early 20s, behind until he finished the class he was teaching. James Gay was given a little Negro boy as compensation for his work instead of money, and with the boy James followed his parents' route west on horseback. The family had settled near Pinson Stations by the Mobile and Ohio RR. The land was poor, the timer mostly scrubby oak, but it was well-watered. (Apparently, the three cousins were the sons of John Mandeville Mays) Leonard continued his letter, saying the five sons of John and RAchel took a liking to the daughters of Johnny Fulbright, a neighbor who owned the mill on Bear Creek. Three of the sons married into the Fulbright family. Zene remained a bachelor. James Gay Mays married Ann Fulbright when he was around 32 years of age, according to Leonard. The couple had three sons: Rufus Adolphus (Dock) born about 1839 married Nanie Davis and had sons James Grayson, Bruce and Robert Lee and daughter Vesta; Thaddeus married Mattie Johnson and had eight children: Alice, Mollie Kate, Charlie, Gracie, Ada Lou, Jim Nick, Lem and Eva;, and Neal Wellington born Jan. 19, 1844, died Aug. 1, 1922, married Feb. 15, 1866 to Mary Emily Bryant (Leonard's father) and had seven children: Leonard Gay, Thomas Westbrook, Jennie Ann, Emily Bryant, Neal Wellington, Elizabeth Bowen and Fulbright Fry. James and RAchel also had two daughters: Ann who married James Swink and moved to Rusk Co Texas and Susan who married James Alford at Pinson and had four children: Albert, Jennie, James and Robert. After Ann Fulbright Mays died, James Gay married Serena Weaver and this couple had four children: Louena, James Gay, Waunie and Hugh Hines. Leonard says that he had thougt Uncle Benjamin went to KY, but later learned that he settled at about where Paris, TN now is located and he had a son, also named Benjamin. Leonard said this Benjamin became a Congressman from the state of Nebraska. Alfonso was the father of Hubert and Wyatt Mays, and he lived and died near Pinson. Herbert's children were named John, Bob, Doss, Annie and Florence. Annie married George Simmons. They reared a large family in Texas (Harlingen). Forence married a Mr. Cunningham. Wyatt married Miss Simmons, sister of George Simmons and they had at least one daughter, Ava. John Mandeville Mays and Sarah Fulbright Mays has 12 children, six boys and six girls. The sons in order of age were: Byrd, Milton, William W., Thomas L., John orace and Charles Edward. The girls were Emma, Elvira, Fannie, Martha, Elizabeth, and Laura. I have a lot of information on this family. James Gay's father Benjamin served in the Revolutionary War (but his wife was not Leutitia-that was a mistake). Benjamin was born in Stafford Co VA, the son of Robert Mays and his first wife Elizabeth Bolling Mays. The couple moved to Amherst Co in the 1760s, where both died, Robert in 1808.
