I'm struggling to find any reference to Richard Mays and his family in the GRO/St Catherine's House BDM indexes. Either the children weren't registered, or if they were they are not yet included in the FreeBMD project. Some of the family may have migrated, probably to Canada, as many can't be found in the 1881 Census of England, nor the 1880 Census of the USA. None of the children nor the parents appear in the on-line IGI either, but London has very poor coverage. Variations such as MAY, MAYE, MAYO, MAYES, MAZE, MAIZE have been considered in the FreeBMD and IGI. I will be checking the GRO microfiche for the mising quarters, and I'm currently (July 2005) browsing through the thousands of pages of the 1851 Census for the Clerkenwell district, but if the following data from the 1861 Census rings bells with you, I will be happy to hear from you and exchange information. 1861 Clerkenwell, 6 Easton Place (this was built over to widen Farringdon Road, and was parallel with Easton Street) MAYS, Richard, 44, bricklayer, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Elizabeth, 30, -, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Richard, 20, bricklayer, born Clerkenwell MAYS, John, 14, -, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Mary, 12, -, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Thomas, 11, -, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Elizabeth, 10, -, born Clerkenwell MAYS, William, 4, -, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Henry, 1, -, born Clerkenwell Note that Elizabeth senior appears to be the second wife of Richard, and is probably not the mother of Richard junior through to at least Thomas and possibly Elizabeth junior. As mentioned above, no record of Richard's marriage(s), baptism or death has been located, either in the on-line IGI or in the FreeBMD Site to date. His son Richard married and was found in London in 1881, at 42 Winchester Street, but not in 1901. His family then consisted of:- MAYS, Richard, 39, head, bricklayer, born Clerkenwell MAYS, Elizabeth, 40, wife, -, born St Andrew, Middlesex MAYS, Richard, 17, son, bricklayer, born St Pancras MAYS, John, 15, son, errand boy, born St Pancras MAYS, Frederick, 11, son, scholar, born St Pancras MAYS, George, 9, son, scholar, born St Pancras MAYS, Alfred, 7, son, scholar, born St Pancras MAYS, Robert, 5, son, scholar, born St Pancras John married in St Pancras in 1874 to Sarah SMITH, and migrated to South Australia in 1876. Henry was found in the 1901 Census, in St Lukes, with his family, consisting of Alice, Alice junior, Henry, Rosa, Florence and Ada. William possibly in 1901 Census, place not specified in the index, as a Carman, aged 44, born in St Lukes. If you are connected with any branch of this family, or if you can help I will be very pleased to hear from you, as I am presently unable to get past the current stumbling blocks. Many thanks, Jim Mays, Victoria, Australia Notify Administrator about this message?
