Loretta "Grace" (Walker) May, 85, passed away on Thursday (Feb. 7, 2008) at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Services to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at University Baptist Church at 1505 Seventh St., Charleston, with the Rev. Tim Boyce and the Rev. John Keyes officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon. Visitation will be an hour before the service at the church.
Grace, as she was affectionately known, was born in Mattoon on October 8, 1922, to C.M. Walker and Ethel (Carpenter) Walker. She was united in marriage to Garland L. May in July 1946, in Paris. They were married twenty-three years before his death in 1969. She is survived by her loving daughter, Judith Suzanne "Susie" May and several nieces and nephews and their families. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, one half-brother and six half-sisters.
Grace attended High School at Charleston. She later became employed by Moore's Business Forms where she used her eye for details to design various forms. Grace also worked out of her home as a beautician and enjoyed visiting with her many clients over the years. She was a devoted and faithful member of University Baptist Church, Charleston, since 1950 and generously gave of both her time and resources.
Grace especially loved children and faithfully volunteered for the second grade class at Carl Sandburg Elementary School in Charleston on a weekly basis. Grace also shared her skills as a homemaker with many children as a 4-H volunteer for the Charleston "Happy Homemakers ." She took great pride in teaching her daughter to sew a straight seam and enjoyed seeing her daughter go on to the Illinois State Fair with her projects.
Grace was a kind and loyal friend to many and treasured the time she spent with her daughter. She loved nothing more than tending to her beautiful flower gardens and spent many hours watching the birds drawn to the blooms. Grace was an expert at growing fruits and vegetables in her garden and loved sharing the fruits of her labors with others, especially her tomatoes and strawberries.
Grace will be remembered as a supportive and exceptional mother who invested of herself in others. Her giving spirit blessed all who knew her and her gracious hospitality will be missed by many.
