Updates:

1) EARLY LACEY AND LEE DOCUMENTS

Charles Baker has sent some images of George Lacey's will ( transcribed Appendix A ) along with other short excerpts pertaining to the Lacey family in Upper Canada ( Appendix B ), which is much appreciated. Without question, the will rules out Ichabod Lacey as a son of George ( as do other developments, see section 2 below ). Three other excerpts, from the Jubilee History of Thorold, Some Graves in Lundy's Lane, and Lincoln at Bay, contain information that is to some extent in conflict. The sketch from the Jubilee History of Thorold (1897) indicates that George and Elizabeth came from New Jersey. The next two accounts, by Green (1911, 1923), mention only Maryland. In the 1911 excerpt ( the inscription from the gravestone plus a biographical sketch ) Green indicates that George Lacey was born in Maryland; in the 1923 excerpt ( from a biography that has been written in the form of a historical narrative ) Green implies that George Lacey was born in Ireland and was at first encouraged by his parents to become a priest, but decided against this and instead moved to the new American Republic; he then married Elizabeth Lee in Maryland ( who lived on an estate there, and brought water to Washington's troops on the Potomac according to the 1911 sketch ) and they eventually settled in Upper Canada. Both Charles Baker and I have wondered about the source for the latter information since no references are given in either work. I am inclined to think that Green, who was born two decades after the death of his great grandmother Elizabeth Lee and forty years after the death of his great grandfather George Lacey, probably heard the story about Washington and the Potomac from cousins who had by then settled in Maryland ( i.e. Revolutionary folklore that only developed later ), but this is hard to assess one way or the other since Green's source is not given. In any event, the parentage of Elizabeth Lee is once again in question ( cf. sections 2 and 3 below ) so it is nevertheless possible that her family resided in Maryland or in another State before they lived in New Jersey.

2) ICHABOD LACEY

I undertook a long search to sort out the "Ichabod Lacey b. 1810 Upper Canada" mystery and it turns out that not only is Ichabod Lacey not the son of George Lacey of Thorold, he isn't even Ichabod Lacey. "Ichabod Losee" resided Haldimand Twp, and presumably descends from one of the many Losee families of New York and New Jersey that settled in Canada before 1810. Three Losees are listed on the Old UEL list; a Daniel Losee married Lydia Huff 01 JUN 1812 in Haldimand Twp, where Ichabod lives, and a Jonas ( also the name of Ichabod's son ) owned land there in the 1820s. With that huge detour out of the way I no longer consider Ichabod Leigh a particularly good candidate for Elizabeth's Lee father and I now think we're looking for a different family. An updated / revised chart of descendants for George of Thorold is given in Appendix C.

3) NEW JERSEY LEES

Having recently gone through all the Leigh / Lee marriage records in the state of New Jersey previous to about 1820, which I probably should have done earlier, two records strike me as being a match among otherwise random entries. These are:

ELIZABETH LEE m. GEORGE LACEY 10 DEC 1797 in Hunterdon County – J.P. Bowlby.
JOHN SR. LEE m. ELIZABETH HUNTER 28 AUG 1803 in Hunterdon County – J.P. Bowlby.

In total there are only about 21 marriages on record as having been performed by J.P. Thomas Bowlby, who himself lived in Bethlehem NJ, and these are two Lee entries among them. George and Elizabeth Lacey's oldest son was named John Lee Lacey, so the name was sure to figure into her family somehow, but rather than being for John Leigh the son of Ichabod Leigh it now seems likely John Lacey was named for the John Lee listed here. Checking the census / tax lists for John Lees in New Jersey at about this time, there is:

LEE, JOHN JR. Bethlehem Twp, 1793

A working hypothesis is: John Jr. Lee and Elizabeth Lee are the children of John Sr. Lee who remarried to Elizabeth Hunter in 1803. John Jr. Lee was married by 1793 when he was listed as the head of the Lee house for the tax list ( unless John Jr of the census became John Sr of the marriage record after the death of his father ). To make things more difficult, absolutely nothing is known about John Jr. Lee of Bethlehem NJ or the John Sr. Lee who married Elizabeth Hunter. As far as Lees in Upper Canada go ( re: the possibility that others in Elizabeth's family might have relocated with her and George c. 1797 ), a James Lee is on record as having died in Lincoln in 1808 and a Hiram Lee served with George Lacey in the 2nd Lincoln Militia in 1814; it's unknown whether these Lees were of any relation to Elizabeth, however, as the surname is otherwise relatively common. A list of Lees whose wills are on record in New Jersey prior to 1760 ( far from exhaustive ) is included in Appendix E.

4) BENJAMIN LACEY OF VIRGINIA

I've done some satellite searching ( who lived near whom, when, where, why ) and several descendants of George Lacy Sr. of Bethlehem seem to be linked to children of a Philemon Lacy of North Carolina, born about 1732 in Virginia, whom a 1767 land transaction presents as the son of a Benjamin Lacy of Brunswick County, Virginia. This Benjamin is probably "Benjamin Lacey of Worcester" who in 1719 was sentenced to a seven-year term of indentured service in the American Colonies for "stealing bacon". After his debt to society was paid ( 1726 ) he would have been free to leave and start a family. Philemon alone is documented as a son of Benjamin but I suspect that George Lacey ( b. 1729 ) and Richard Lacey ( b. 1735 ) of New Jersey might also be sons, the latter two being linked by their residence in Hunterdon County NJ ( Richard's son Garret even resided Bethlehem Twp in 1793 ), George's children in turn being linked to Philemon's children in Christian County KY by about 1800. All three men had sons named Benjamin and William and a daughter named Martha. When indentured servants in Virginia had fulfilled their terms of service ( 7 or 14 years ) they could either re-indenture themselves for lack of other options or they could move inland to places like the Carolinas and Kentucky ( and, perhaps, to places like Hunterdon County NJ ). Early Virginia has the most poorly-preserved records after New Jersey, so this and any other Virginia-based Lacey leads will be hard to prove or disprove on the basis of extant parish records. Consequently I am again endorsing:

5) LACEY Y-DNA TESTING

It is apparent that many Laceys settled early in America and that about half of them settled in Virginia. Early Virginia records have huge gaps, if they have survived at all, so in many cases DNA may be the only way to determine which early Virginia Lacey you descend from.

In Britain the Lacey / Lacy surname occurs with greatest frequency in England and Ireland; England had 3400 Laceys in 1841 and in the Griffiths Valuation of Ireland (1848-1864) there were 565 Lacey heads of house, or about 2825 Laceys if one assumes five people per household with the surname. Scotland had only 24 Laceys in 1841 and Wales had only 23. The distribution of the name is strongest in southeastern Ireland ( Leinster ) and in the south of England, which factor supports the etymology of the name as meaning "from Lassy", a town in Normandy on the northern coast of France.

ENGLAND 1841 ( 3400 Laceys / Lacys )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------North East England ( 0.7 % )--------------------
-------------------------------------------------Yorkshire and the Humber ( 5.5 % )------
------North West England ( 4.9 % )----------------------------------------------------------
---------West Midlands ( 5.8 % )-------------East Midlands ( 18.0 % )---------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------East of England ( 10.0 % )
------------------------------------------------------------- Greater London ( 13.5 % )-------
---South West England ( 19.4 % )------South East England ( 22.1 % )------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IRELAND c. 1855 ( 565 Lacey / Lacy heads of house )

---------------------------------
-------------------------Ulster ( 0.5% )
--------Connaught ( 5.5% )--
------------------Leinster ( 71.7% )
---Munster ( 22.3% )-----
------------------------------

In the 1850 U.S. census there were 279 Lac(e)ys born Ireland compared to 67 born England. In total there were only about 12 heads of household in Britain who were using the De Lacey / D'Lacy variant of the name at that time, who are said to be the line descended from the De Lacys of the Norman Conquest. Since the Lacey / Lacy name is otherwise just a toponym, given to anyone who came to Britain from Lassy between about 1100 and 1400 CE, most Lacy / Lacey lineages will be genetically unrelated. As a result, a Y-DNA match between any two Lacey / Lacy lineages is highly significant from a genealogical standpoint.

Compared to late arrivals from England and Ireland, North American Lacys who can trace their descent back before 1800 should fall into a small group of haplotypes that descend from the 10 or 15 male Laceys who settled in Virginia prior to that time, plus some auxiliary groups from other states which on the whole are better documented, e.g. the Bucks County PA line. Everyone with as yet undetermined Lacey roots ( in particular descendants of Richard, George and Philomen Lacey ) should have Y-DNA tested for a match. Laceys who were sent to America as bonded servants are listed in Appendix F below.

APPENDIX B: Other Excerpts

------------

"ELIZABETH LEE, wife of George Lacey, was born in October, 1764, and died July 15th, 1864. George and Elizabeth Lacey came to Canada from New Jersey in 1796, and settled on lot 117, Thorold township, where she continued to reside until her death at the age of 99 years and 9 months.
"ABIGAIL S. LACEY, wife of Robert W. Hagar and daughter of George and Elizabeth Lacey, was born July 28th, 1801, on lot 117, Thorold Township, and died at Salinas City, California, January 16th, 1884."

- John H. Thompson, ed. "Jubilee History of Thorold" ( Thorold: Thorold Post Printing and Publishing Company, 1897 )

"LACEY – 'George Lacey, died January 27th, 1840, aged 67 years, 3 months and 17 days.'
"He was born in Maryland and in 1796 moved to Canada, settling near the 'Black Horse Inn' in Thorold. He served in the 2nd Lincoln under Captains Kerby and Crysler and at Chippawa his neighbor, Wilkerson, fell by his side, killed by the bullet of an Indian, who was in turn despatched by Lacey. A Masonic certificate dated 1824 is preserved by Lacey's descendants. His wife, Elizabeth, was a Lee of Maryland and when a child was sent by her parents to carry food to the starving men of Washington's army. She was buried here, but no stone marks her grave."

- Ernest Green, "Some Graves in Lundy's Lane" ( Niagara Historical Bulletin No. 22, 1911 )

"Silent they [ George and Elizabeth Lacey ] stood, the man's eyes fixed on the ground and his ears strained for any sound alien to the little clearing and the surrounding forest. Forty years of varying fortunes had left their trace on him. An Irish boy, destined by his parents for the church, he had fled from the prospect of a peaceful calling ere his education was finished and had found a world more to his liking in the new Republic of America. Still restless and unsatisfied, he soon set forth on his wandering again, but this time not alone, for with George Lacey went, as his bride, sweet Bessie Lee. Sorrowfully-happy, she bade farewell to her girlhood home by the Potomac and relinquished the civilized surroundings of a Maryland estate to follow her husband to the unknown wilderness of Upper Canada. Crossing the Niagara at Queenston, in the first year of the century, they soon found land to their liking and began to hew out a new home for themselves in the beech woods near the Beaver Dams."
