Here are the clues: Trying to find info on my great grandmother's 1st husband and his son her 1/2 brother, Joseph Polley. My grandma is 80 and would like to know something about this situation........... Lorenzo Dow Cooper Polley was b. ~1884 Levia, Daviess, Ky. His parents were Rosa Mae Shull and Elijah Clark Polley. Rosa remarried to Alfred Cecil after Elijah died. Lorenzo married my great grandmother, Mary Christina Reardon b. 7/23/1886 Linn Creek, Camden, MO. They were 1st cousins. Her parents were John E. Reardon and Carrie Shull.(Carrie Shull and Rosa Mae Shull were children of George N. Shull and Laura Hinman.) Lorenzo and Mary's children were Joseph Polley b. 11/1/1909 Portland, Multnomah, OR and James Polley b. 6/9/1911 Lebanon, Laclede, MO. I knew my uncle Jim. He was 17 when my grandma was born, so he was quite a bit older and died when I was in high school. They have different fathers. My grandma said her brothers never mentioned their father. They may not have known him too well. I can not find my great grandmother on the 1910 census. She is not with her family in Kansas City, MO. But her husband Lorenzo is listed in Henderson, Ky with his mother, Rosa, and step-father Alfred Cecil. He is listed as "married." But neither Mary Christina or her newborn Joseph Polley (1909) are listed in the household or anywhere else. I found an intriguing marriage record at the Oregon State archives: it is for a Dow Cooper b. KY and a Mary Reirdon b. MO. Mariage date: 3/16/1908. The name of course is incorrect for the husband, his full name was Lorenzo Dow Cooper Polley, but according to my grandma this was not an a marriage that was approved of as they were 1st cousins, and he may have altered his name a bit. The birthdate is also a bit off for Mary. They may have run off to Oregon together. This date of marriage fits, because my grandma's oldest brother, Joseph was born 11/1/1909 in Portland, OR. The names, places of birth seem too coincidental not to be their marriage. And even more so since their first son was born in Oregon. I got Joseph's birthdate from school records of the Portland Public School District. He supposedly went to grade school at Monitor School in Silverton, but they could not find a record. He went to High School at Benson Poly-Technic. There is no record of his death. My grandma's brother Joseph disappeared about 1950. They lived in Portland, OR on the corner of 17th and Couch Street. No one has ever seen or heard from him again. My aunt has his bible - the front cover has a hand written note in pencil "Joseph Polley (1st line) England (2nd line)" the back blank pages have hand written notes that state "Loren Collard" He had been married to a woman named Mildred Westover. It is also interesting that Lorenzo and Mary's 1st son was born in Oregon 1909. Lorenzo is in Henderson, Ky by himself 1910 and Mary is not listed anywhere. And then they have another son together, James Polley, b. 1911 in Lebanon, Laclede, MO where Mary C's grandparents live. (Her parents are in Kansas City, MO.) I have James's bith certificate. It lists his father "Lorayen" Polley as a machinist" and they live in Lebanon, MO. But there is another clue........James was originally listed on his birth certificate as John D. Polley it is crossed out and the name James Polley is above it. All the vitals are handwritten. It also states that there was a correction by affidavit made. The name and date are difficult to read. My grandma vaguely remembers her mom once saying about her 1st husband,Lorenzo, "that man left me." That is all she remembers her mom saying. She wsa small, but seemed to pick up on other conversations of her aunts that her mom may have married a cousin and it was disapproved of. After I did research I learned that her mother did marry a cousin. My grandma's brothers were living with their grandparents, John and Carrie Reardon, in Clackamas, OR on the 1920 census. Their mother, Mary Polley, is a cook in aGerman Household in Clackamas, OR. In 1923 when her mother Carrie died she was listed as Mary Polley, but on her son's school records in Sep 1924 she is listed as Mary Rees and is married to my grandma's father Willard Rees. To date, I have not found a record of this marriage. My grandma thought they were married in Bellingham, Wa. They may have been, but they did not apply for a license there or in Portland, Or where they lived. Regarding Lorenzo Dow Cooper Polley..........none of his siblings obits list him, even though they mention other siblings in Ky or Vandeburgh, IN. so no one knows what happened to him either. I have not been able to find an obit for his mother yet. Well, that is alot of Info !! I am hoping that something will come of it !! Notify Administrator about this message?
