Interesting......Why did they change the spelling of their names?

Whenever I have encountered such a name change, I tend to attribute it to a mistake combined with illiteracy usually someone writing the name down, spelling it incorrectly and the
other person not being able to read or write and therefore unable to correct the mistake.
The surnames 'KIRKLEY, KIRTLEY' and even "KIRKLAND, KIRTLAND' are easy, even today, to mix up.

I know you are researching in England, where the 'KIRK____' surnames came from, but in South Carolina in 1800 and 1810, many KirKLEY's were recorded as KirKLAND's....as there were many more KirKLAND's than KirKLEY's.
