Works Progress Administration of Virginia Historical Inventory and was completed on November 3,1937 by John F. Botts of Winston, Virginia.

This write up is a part of the Virginia W.P.A. Historical Inventory Project sponsored by the Virginia Conservation Commission under the direction of its Division of History. Credit to both the Commission and the W.P.A. is requested for publication, in whole or part.

I will type up the contents of the file for you.

1. SUBJECT: James City.
2. LOCATION: Exactly half-way from Culpeper to Madison, Virginia.
3. DATE: Unknown.
4. OWNERS: S.M. Bruce
5. DESCRIPTION: Formerly the home of Jesse James'family and a favorite hang-out of the famous outlaw, this place is quite interesting. There are remaining two store houses and two residences. The stores are joined to the dwellings. The house that the present store is a part of is indeed pretty inside. the wainscoting is of two foot boards. Most of the doors are of the Holy Cross style. This style of door we understand was used in order to keep witches out. There are quite a number of fireplaces throughout this huge house. The windows beside the fireplaces contain but eight panes. The stairs are curved and wainscoted. There are five chimneys of brick and one of stone. The side porch is double-decked. The windows, although narrow, give an enormous amount of light. The house has three stories and a basement.

6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: We found some quite interesting curiosities in this old store. Among them was an old account book dated 1853. I went through this to see what names I could recognize and found an account of Miss Maria Kemper, who later became my grandmother. She received six cents per pair for hand knit socks. We also found an old trunk, medicine chest and quite a few interesting articles. The prettiest furniture were two acorn beds.

James City was once a post office and today the post office remains but is known as Leon.

8. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: S.M. Bruce, owner, Leon, Virginia.
