Tish, The Scottish association of Sir Francis Kirtley is a significant issue of interest to me. I would think that Kirtley does not have an "official" tartan, but would be associated with a particular clan, or is a sept of a clan. Clans are generally associated with specific areas or islands of Scotland. There are highland and lowland clans. The documentation that my sister Bonnie developed for me reflects that he was borne about 1690 in Scotland. Finding out where Sir Francis was borne would help to determine his clan association. His wife Margaret's last name was Roberts, which is most likely a sept of Clan Robertson. Clan Robertson is also associated with Clan Donnachaidh. Her father was John Roberts. I am directly related to them through their daughter Sarah who married Jonathan Cowherd. A good book that would give you information about Clans is Collins Guide to SCOTS Kith & Kin or Robert Bains The Clans and Tartans of Scotland. Since you are going to Scotland, and maybe Edinburgh, you may want to visit the National Trust for Scotland's headquarters at Charlotte Square. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes in your search. If it would not be to inconvenient, I would be most appreciative if you would be kind to share any information you are able to "dig" up. Again, best wishes. Stan
