Cheryl, Your families of interest traveled and abided in areas still primitive at the time, wilderness. There are a number of records mentioning the names you know, but this does not paint a clear enough picture for us...in large measure because the given names were repeated in two or three family branches, all moving around somewhat together. For instance, the spotty recordings for Reuben and Gabriel KEITH as seen in VA and NC records before 1800 refer more than just one man with the given name. Best known relative is a James KEITH, b. ca 1727 in Scotland, who married in 1755 and settled in Montgomery (now Floyd) County, VA. There are numerous indications (though we have no solid proof) that James was either brother or nephew to a Reuben, a Gabriel, and a Jesse Keith who, along with several children of James, moved to Buncombe Co., NC before 1800. Earliest NC mention of Gabriel is in his entry for a grant of 600 acres in a part of Buncombe County which later became Yancey Co., NC, on a creek which was afterwards known as Gabriel's Creek.) [Reuben KEITH entered 400 acres, located at the head of Doe Run, 4 Mar 1762, beginning at a tree marked "RK"; James KEITH entered 400 acres located on the south fork of Doe Run, beginning at the same tree, marked "RK", 18 Mar 1762. Doe run is said to be a tributary of Snow Creek.][Researcher Tony Armes and others claim that James was in battle of Culloden, 16 Apr 1746, captured and held prisoner at Stirling and Cheste, 1746-1747, then was transported on the ship Gildart to Port North Potomack, MD, as indentured servant for 7 years. see http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/stoz/stewarth5.htm] [Excerpt from the book by David Dobson, "Scots Banished to America": The Scots of this story , a choice few of 88 convicts of the Battle of Culloden...The Scots of this story came to America on the ship Gildart, which was just one of many ships that carried the families that were banished for some reason or other." Reuben Keith, son of Samuel KEITH settled in Meadow Creek, Pulaski Co., VA, 120 acres on Meadow Creek, 62 acres on Stephen's Creek branch of New River, and 170 acres on east side of New River, on both sides of Meadow Creek, Pulaski Co.. George KEITH Sr. on Elk Creek, listed 1777 in Capt. McCorkle's Company, Montgomery Co., VA, and preformed marriages in Grayson Co. from 1796 till death, ca 1803. He read law and obtained the right to act as Attorney in Grayson Co, and held school on Elk Creek. 1793, David HARBOUR bought tract on Indian Creek from Reuben KEITH. First son of the above mentioned James KEITH was Samuel (b. 1758, Bedford Co., VA) lived in what is presently Floyd County, VA. After serving in the Revolutionary War, he sold out and moved his family to North Carolina (probably Buncombe Co.). Second son of James was William KEITH (b. 1761, Franklin Co., VA) m. 1st to an ALLEN, Wayne Co., KY; m. 2nd 30 Jan 1828 to Mary, daughter of Osborne and cousin Mary DAVENPORT (widow who later m. Thomas McINLIN, and moved to Putnam Co., IN). William and the ALLEN girl had among their sons John KEITH (b. 25 Jul 1788, Montgomery Co., VA) m. 1st 14 Jan 1813 to Polly ALLEN, Wayne Co., KY; m. 2nd 1820 [Maxine Casada, reports marriage as 27 Feb 1816] to Delila, daughter of John CANADA, Wayne Co., KY Here are some KEITH/ALLEN references you may find helpful: William KEITH (b. 1793, VA) m. 23 Dec 1813 to Sarah "Sally", daughter of John ALLEN [LDS Record shows daughter of Drury and Eleanor (Jarrott) ALLEN]; preacher in Washington Co., TN and Buncombe Co., NC; a co-founder of Mars Hill College; d. 28 Aug 1853, Madison Co, NC. [This line covered in detail in “Who’s Who in the Keith Family”, by Josephine and William L. Adams.] This William was son of Reuben KEITH (b. 1764, acording to service pension record from the War of 1812, Bedford Co., VA) m. Elizabeth RUNNION (b. 3 Dec 1774); d. 20 Mar 1854, Buncombe (later Madison) Co., N.C.; in early 1790s, had land in Montgomery, VA, "between headwaters of Greasy Creek and Indian Creek, waters of New River", but was soon living in Wilkes Co., NC, and later Buncombe Co., NC; d. 20 Mar 1854, NC. Another son of Reuben was John KEITH (b. 1802, NC) m. Mary "Polly" ALLEN; lived in Yancey Co., NC in 1850. There were also KEITH/ALLEN marriage in the family of Cornelius KEITH who lived first on the Roanoke River (1727) at the NC line, later spreading to Surrey Co., NC (1743), and to western SC (after the war).
