If it's your family you could try to get the Koseki Tohon [family register] by requesting it.

You will need to know how to write the family name in kanji, and knowing the name of the head of household would help. Do a request and send it to the City office were the family is from with a fee. They may ask for proof of relation. I'm not certain how much the fee is now, but sending an international money order for about $20 - $30.00 will get you started. If you do not know the address of the city office your nearest Japanese Consul can give it to you. Ask them how much it may cost.
