HUNTER of College Highway, Avon, dean of men and chairman of the mathematics department at HILLYER College died Tuesday night at his home. He was born in Savannah, GA., Feb. 26, 1896, was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1915 and later received an electrical engineering degree from Columbia University. HUNTER served with the U. S. Navy 19 years, retiring with the rank of commander. During World War 1, he was with the British Grand Fleet stationed in Ireland. He then became aide to ADMIRAL MARK L. BRISTOL. At the outbreak of World War 11, he was named commanding officer of the NROTC unit at YALE University and in 1946 he was promoted to the academic rank of professor of naval science and tactics at the university. HUNTER was a member of the faculty at Avon Old Farms School from 1932, through 1941, serving as aide to the provost. He joined the faculty of HILLYER College in 1946, having served a term as executive secretary of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. He was active in community affairs in Avon, having been at one time chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals and a member of the town's Red Cross executive committee. He was a member of the YALE University Elizabethan Club. In paying tribute to HUNTER, ALAN S. WILSON, president of HILLYER College, said Wednesday evening: "His life was an example of devotion to duty, interest in people and dedication to his work and family. he was every inch a gentleman. Those of us who were closest to him will always remember DEAN HUNTER as a sincere friend and an able collegue upon wise judgment we could ever depend. HUNTER leaves his wife, MRS. MARY ERNESTINE APPLETON HUNTER; a daughter, MRS. JOHN LOGAN of Fairfield; two brothers, FRANCIS C. HUNTER of Washington, D.C., and JOHN H. HUNTER of Philadelphia, PA., a sister, MRS. HNTER ANDERSON, of Savannah, GA., and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at ST.
