My Aunt Dorothy Bounds wrote an article on our connection to the Hibbs family. One "Maria Hibbs" is my great, great grandmother...let me go into the story...

Remember, this story is made from the information that Dorothy Bounds had available to her.

The Hibbs Family by Dorothy Bounds

The origin of the Hibbs family is not known but the family is believed to be of German descent and came from Germantown, Pennsylvania to Kentucky and then to Ross County, Ohio before finally settling in Illinois. The parents are unknown, but the following are known siblings: Ann, John, Joseph, Cyriss, Maria, and Harvey Issac.

Ann, believed to have been born in Ohio, married John Wiseman. They had four children: Albert "Jack" Benjamin, Minnie and Carrie. Ann was married a second time to James Kelly.

Joseph Cyriss married Ann Gard (born 1840), and they had one daughter, Grace Marie. Joseph died of typhoid fever when Grace was a baby. John was born in 1829, probably in Ohio. He married Melinda A. Nickels. He later married Nancy Goodman Nash, all are buried at West Cemetary. (I have photos of both of these tombstones, for those that are interested.)

Harvey Isaac was born in 1836 in Ross County, Ohio. He served during the Civil War for three and a half years, and married Julia Ann Jennings. Both are buried at the West Cemetary.

James Hibbs

James Hibbs, son on John and Melinda A. Nickels Hibbs, married Sarah Gard. They had nine children (only seven are listed): Maria, Mary, Myrtle, Wilbur, Frank, Vernan, and Edward.

Maria Catherine was born April 14, 1875. She married George Nash and had two daughters, Hattie Bell and Rosie Mae. Goeroge died June 1896 at the age of 30 from tuberculosis, and is buried in the Hopwood (also known as "Hopewell" Cemetery. She married William Edward Shelton May 1897 who was born Feb. 5, 1857 in Virginia. They had six children: Wayne, Pern, Alva, Mildred, Edith, and Aaron. Ed died June 18, 1934 and Maria died Sept. 20, 1939. Ed and Maria Hibbs Nash Shelton are buried at the West Cemetery.

Mary married Edward Charleton, and did not have children. Edward was born in 1876 and after his death in 1910, Mary married George Hagel. Edward is buried at the West Cemetery, but Mary, who died Aug. 24, 1964, and George, who died May 1948 are buried in Camp Butler Cemetary in Springfield.

Myrtle was born June 19, 1889 in Athens. She married Arthur "Red" Knox on Dec. 24, 1905 and they had eight children: Harold, Russell, Leland, Velda, Norman, Raymon, George, and Leroy. "Red" was born June 1, 1884 in England and died June 28, 1949 and is buried in Elm Lawn Cemetery near Chicago. Myrtle, who married again to Mr. Moorhouse, died March 15, 1954 and is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Springfield. Their infant son Russell is buried at the West Cemetery along with two of Leroy's children.

Wilbur was born June 10, 1876 or 1877. He married Grace Day (born 1886) and had seven children: Lenord, Lester, Everett Lee, Clarance, Vera, Melba, and Thelma. Wilbur died in 1955 and Grace died in a car accident in 1942. Both are buried in the West Cemetery.

Frank married Lottie Yoakum and they had four children: Zelma, Raymond, Almena, and Vernan. Frank died of tuberculosis in 1918 at the age of 53. Both are buried in West Cemetery.

Vernan was born in 1884 and died in 1888 when only four years old. he is buried in the West Cemetery.

Edward married Ida Day (sister to Grace Day, wife of Wilbur Hibbs), they had five children: Clarance, Ralph, Ellis, Cecil, Esther. Clarance and Esther are buried in the West Cemetary.

John Hibbs

John Hibbs was probably born in Ohio about 1829. He married Melinda A. Nickels who was born about 1834 in Ohio, and they had three children: Samuel H., John E., and James.

Samuel H. was born on Oct. 14, 1851. He married Eliza A. Gard and they had four children: Sarah Melinda, Mary Lavern, Lorenzo Cornelius "Calvin", and Francis Marion. Eliza died May 13, 1883 and Sam married Cynthia Miller. Sam died Nov. 19, 1926 at Bartonville, IL. All are buried at the West Cemetery.

John E. married Harriet "Hattie" D. Goodman, the daughter of Martin and N. E. Baker Goodman, on Jan. 19, 1893. They had six children: Adam, Lora May, John Dewey, Herman, Rosco A., and Flossie Ellen. Hattie died April 5, 1908 and is buried in the Hall Cemetery.

James married Sarah Gard, they had nine children: Maria, Mary, Myrtle, Wilbur, Frank, Vernan, Edward (These seven were all that were listed.)

Melinda died in 1894 and late in his life, John married Nancy Goodman Nash, widow of Granville Nash. A farmer throughout most of his life, John died in 1911 and his second wife, Nancy, died in 1904. Both are buried in the West Cemetery.

**Whew** that was a lot of typing :)

Alright, John Hibbs is my great, great, great, great grandfather. And his wife, Melinda A. Nickels would be my 4th Great grandmother. Their son, James Hibbs is my 3rd Great Grandfather, he married Sarah Gard, and their daughter is my 2nd great grandmother...Maria Hibbs. Maria Hibbs and George Nash had my great grandmother, Rosy Mae Nash, who was married twice, once to Grover Cleveland Underwood, and the second time to John W. Bartlett. She died Rosy Mae Bartlett, but through her marriage with Mr. Underwood, she gave birth to my grandmother, which is still living...Mary Underwood.

I need to know where this Hibbs connection fits into..for years the only thing that my family had known was nothing past James Hibbs and Sarah Gard...this story brought about one generation higher than that, but I'm interested in going further than that.
