Dear Kimberly, My information is that the surname Hibbs is a variation of Ibbs or Ibbotson, and it is a diminutive of the female Christian name Isabella or Isabel. So it is one of the few names in English which means "son of" a woman's name, rather than a man's name - like Jackson. The "H" was probably added by English dialect speakers who tend to add and subtract h's according to whim It tends to be a West Country surname (chiefly from Devon) in England. Hope this is helpful, Jeanette de Montalk.
