I have recently found some info on my Hewitt line from Sangamon Co., Illinois. I am hoping somebody can confirm or disprove this for me.
I found an 1870 census for Stephensburg, Frederick, Va. with John W. Hewett age 47 born in Pa., wife Jennette age 44 born in Va., children: Emily age 23, James age 20, JOSEPH H. age 18, John H., age 16, Cordena, age 13, Charles age 11, Martha age 8 & Anna age 5 all born in Va. I believe JOSEPH H. is my great grandfather Harvey Hewitt. On Harvey's death certificate his name is Harvey Joseph born 1842 in Frederick Co., W.(?) Virginia. It lists his father's name as John Hewett. Harvey is listed as Joseph H. Hewitt on his Civil War records.
By the 1880 census John W. Hewett & Jeanette, Anna and another daughter Nettie were living in Buchanan, Berrien Co., Mich. In 1883 John W. Hewitt had died in Berrien Co., Mich.
My grandmother, Harvey's daughter was named Anna Geannette Hewitt, because of the name being similar to Harvey's mother it makes me think again that this is the right family. Am I just grasping at straws or is this a possible match?? Anyone have definite info or any input??
