In the 1850 Census Robert and William are living in their fathers household. William is 22, unmarried and a farmer. Robert is 35 and Married to Ellen (Eleanor Houpt) He has 2 children, a 6 year old son named Cornelius and a 2 year old daughter named Ellen. Robert cannot be located on the 1860 census. It appears that he is living with his brother Jonathan in Iowa during the 1870 census and with his son Cornelius in Iowa during the 1880 census. Looking for Roberts wife after 1850 show no results. I belive that I found Cornelius living with his Aunt Elizabeth and her husband Phillip Hartung during the 1860 Census. I haven't been able to determine what became of Roberts daughter Ellen.
William G Robins married Margaret Albertson January 10 1852. She died November 16, 1852 - I believe in childbirth. William cannot be located in the 1860. I believe his 7 year old daughter is living in the household of her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Albertson in 1860 and 1870, apparently never to live in her fathers household again. Elizabeth Albertson happens to live next door to Williams sister Elizabeth and her husband Phillip Hartung, the same couple that took Roberts son into their household.
By 1870 William show up in the census with his new son Edwin and I belive wife Josephine. He is definately in the 1880 census with his wife Josephine and sons Edwin and Harry.
Does anyone know where Robert and William were during the 1860 census. Although PA had service men by those names during the Civil War, I believe they still should have made the 1860 census.
An interesting observation for the Robins/Robbins descendents. Census takers spelled the name of Robert Robins Sr with one b, but his son Robert G had his name spelled with 2 b's even though he was living in the same house. Roberts other sons appear to also have had their names spelled with 2 b's during the 1850 census. These same sons appear to have had their names spelled with 1 b in the 1860 census and some flipped back to 2 b's in the 1870 census. Roberts son Cornelius seems to have maintained the 2 b spelling during all census recordings.
