Eugene T. ‘Gene’ Gleason Obit
PORT HURON — Eugene T. “Gene” Gleason, a longtime resident of Port Huron, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Cambrian Assisted Living, in Tecumseh.
Born Nov. 30, in 1919, in Melvin, Mich., he married Eleanor Molisak of Sarnia on Sept. 26, 1942. She preceded him in death on July 25, 1985. A graduate of St. Stephen’s High School in 1937, Gene served with the U.S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his military service he returned to Port Huron and opened his own dry cleaning business which he operated for many years.
In 1962 he entered the U.S. Customs service, retiring after 20 years in 1982. During his life time he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, and one of the founding members of the St. Stephen’s Athletic Association known as the Dirty Six. In later life he served as chairman of the St. Clair County Building Authority, and on the board for the St. Clair County Council on Aging.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Leahy of Port Huron; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Cheri Gleason of Clinton, Mich.; two daughters, Mary Karen Gleason of California and Teri Gleason of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandsons, Cody (Ashton), Kyle and Luke Gleason of Clinton, Mich.; great-grandson, Caleb, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors under auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home, Port Huron, and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in his name to the American Lung Association or Hospice of Lenawee. Expressions of condolence and messages of sympathy can be sent to karrersimpsonfuneralhome.com.
