Porter was married 1837 in Richland County, OH, to Amy Sams, daughter of Henry Sams. The 1840 census shows them living in Johntown, Perry Twp., Richland County, OH., with a son. Shortly after they moved to Steuben County, IN and lived there until his death in 1880. They had 9 children: Adam H. Gleason; Amos M. Gleason; Lydia M. Gleason; Myron M. Gleason; James Porter Gleason; Rhoda Ellen Gleason; Benoni Philetus Gleason; Eoline Gleason; and Wakefield Gleason. Some of the children moved West to Washington, and California.

Minerva Gleason married Ebenezer Marsh, where and when are unknown. The 1850 census shows them living in Gilead Township, Branch County, MI. They had 4 children: Caroline Rosmond Marsh, Byron Marsh, Chester Marsh, and Dudley Marsh. Ebenezer died in 1856 and Minerva in 1857. The children were raised by different relatives and neighbors, Porter took Dudley.
