I am a philatelist with a specialist interest in Japanese stamps. Recently, I acquired a significant piece of Japanese postal history in the form of a letter, written in English, and personally sent from the Director-General, Department of Communications, Tokyo to: Charles C. Gerrish Hosp. Corps U.S. Army Manila, Philippines The letter was sent from Tokyo on 28 Dec 1899 and arrived in Manila on 13 Jan 1900. A postal clerk in Manila added "Box 16" before Manila in the address. Mr. Gerrish was obviously a stamp-collector as the content of the letter referred to four Japanese stamps which he had sent to the Dept of Communications for expertising. Their response was that the stamps were imitations made by a private firm, and this is what makes the letter historic as it is the only known reference where the Dept of Communications has admitted that such imitations exist. I intend to write an article about this letter and its envelope for inclusion in Japanese philatelic magazines, but the article would be greatly enhanced if I could include some biographical details about the addressee, Charles C. Gerrish. I was wondering if anyone could assist me in obtaining such details (e.g. birthdate, birthplace, period of time spent in Philippines, details of US army rank, company etc while serving in the Phillippines, stamp-collecting interests, etc). I will gratefully acknowledge any such assistance in the article I will be submitting to philatelic journals. Notify Administrator about this message?
