You don't mention finding Gauthiers living close to Louis in censuses before 1880. I think that is where our best chance of finding a link now lies.
I checked my data on the Gauthiers of Prairie du Chien (all my Gauthiers of PDC are descendents of Claude) and found only one line descending from Claude Germain GAUTIER DE VERVILLE the descendency of which I have copied below. Nothing to link your Louis though (I think). The first Louis in that line was born in 1853.
If you cannot find a Gauthier living close to Louis in 1850-1870 then I feel we will be facing a blank wall.

He had many children by Panis Indian Women owned by his uncle, Charles
de Langlade before his marriage to Magdeleine Chevalier.

Wisconsin(Joyce Black Research, from Art H. Fisher; 19 May 1994..). He
married Madeleine Paschal Chevalier, daughter of Louis Paschal Chevalier
and Madeleine Rheaume, on 1 January 1779 Mackinac, Wisconsin(ibid.). He
died in 1803 Prairie du Chien, Crawford, Wisconsin(ibid.).

Henry Munro Fisher was born on 14 November 1776 Hebron,
New York(Joyce Black Research, Genealogy of Joyce Black;
from Art H. Fisher.). He married Madeline Gauthier De Verville,
daughter of Claude Charles Gauthier De Verville and
Madeleine Paschal Chevalier, circa 1796(ibid.). He married
Marie Anne LaSaliere before 1810. Fisher, Henry, Sr. c.1812(?)

left Prairie du Chien, where he had been an independent trader,
at outbreak of War of 1812; brought two sons (Alexander and
Henry) with him to Red River District where he was employed

Chien; French British American'; George Banta Publishing
Company, Menasha, Wisconsin, 1937; pp. 179-180. _(no
referenced traced in HBC Archives until 1821) _1821 employed
as clerk with North West Company (location not traced) (HBC
Archives F.4/49 p.82)(HBCE, F.4/49 p.82.). 1821-1822
employed by H.B.C. after merger with N.W.Co. as clerk; retired
to Canada 1822(ibid, B.239/f/14 fo. 4d.). 1823-1827 returned to

Domithlide married Michel BRISBOIS son of Joseph DUBOIS DIT BRISBOIS and Catherine-Thérèse NAULT DIT LACHAPELLE on 8 Aug 1796 in Michillimackinac,, MI, USA. Michel was born in 1759. He died in 1837.

Michael Brisbois was born in Maska, Canada, in 1759. While
being educated at Quebec, he was one of a corps of students
enrolled to repel Montgomery's invasion in 1775. In 1779
Brisbois entered the fur-trade, arriving at Mackinac that year.
Within a year or more he had permanently settled at Prairie du
Chien, where he became the leading citizen. His trade was with
the Winnebago Indians, and in the decade of the nineties he
had a post near Fond du Lac, Wis. He had several children by
a Winnebago woman, and married in 1796 the daughter of
Charles Gautier. In 1809 he received an American commission
as militia lieutenant of Illinois Territory; his sympathies.
however, in the War of 1812--15, were with the British, to
whom he furnished supplies, but personally he was non-
combatant. He was arrested about 1816 for treason, being
defended at St. Louis by Thomas H. Benton, who secured his
acquittal. In 1829 Brisbois became blind, and died at his Prairie
du Chien home in 1837. See interview with his son, in Wis. Hist.

According to "The Wisconsin Creole" by Rentmeester,
Catherine's father was Charles Gauthier and an unknown
Sioux Panis Slave; but I have had several people look in
Canada for this information and they could not find anything.
(Note by Jean-Pierre Gauthier-Birth was possibly in Prairie du
Chien).
Charlotte Catherine Gautier, baptised April 28, 1756, in
Mackinaw by Priest LeFranc; her father is listed as Charles
Gautier de Verville; her godfather is listed as Augustin de
Langlade.
Catherine married Jean Baptiste BRUNET .
