Although we are not sure of Jane's surname (see C. Flanders' message #239 this Forum), here is some interesting information I researched while visiting the York Maine Library and then researching at the Alfred Maine Court House. (I should add that I later discovered I was NOT related to Stephen Flanders, so I stopped researching this lineage. However, I thought I should post this material for others.) From "History of York, Maine, Vol. I" by Charles E. Banks, page 166 & 167. "Stephen Flanders - This is a very rare English name but is found frequently in Yorkshire where it appears as Flunder and Flounder, and in the adjoining county of Lincoln as Flanders. The name of this emigrant is found only once in the records in 1649 when his wife (Jane) was "presented abusing her husband and his neighbors." (Court Records I, 135.) As there is no further report of the case, he must have removed immediately to Salisbury where he was taxed in 1650 and lived there until his death June 27, 1684." I then went to Alfred Maine Court House and found the records in: Court Records I, but on page 138 (not 135 as stated in the book). I will quote the court record: "The wife of Stephen Flanders presented for abusing her husband and her neighbors. The Constable to have a warant (sic) to bring her to the next court." Other books suggested to research if you are ever in York ME (and which I did not have time to look through), were: Thayer's "Voyage to Sagadahoc" (Gorges Society), 23, 30 & Fanny Hardy Eckstorm's "Maine Indians" (unpublished) (this must be a booklet the library has by a local writer) Hope this information sheds a bit more light on Stephen and Jane Flanders.
