What was passed down by verbal family tradition to me was that Ferrell was of Scottish origin, and Farrell Irish. --Only hearsay evidence--
In at least 1 line of my family the change in spelling was by accident. About 1905 two young brothers went to live with their mothers family and the teacher innocently taught them to spell Farrell. Later one went in the Navy, and his mother corrected the spelling for the official documents to Ferrell. Curiously, as old men I met them before they died, both living in the same house--one still spelling the name Farrell and the other Ferrell. ....For what it's worth, Lloyd
