Today, the name DOW is generally thought of as being Scottish; but going back some centuries, it was also found in quantity in the eastern part of England, generally known as East Anglia, mainly the northern part of the County of Essex and into the County of Suffolk (where incidentally the English town of Ipswich is).
In the centre of London (England) there is a street and the surrounding area called Dowgate just to the east of Cannon Street (Rail) Station. The name derives from the black or dirty conditions resulting from the concentration of leather tanners, there guildhall still being located there.
There also the Dow Caves in South Yorkshire.
