I just found a newspaper article in an old scrapbook belonging to Mary Jennings Watkins b. 1840 who was married to J. Bailey Smith. Mary was from KY but she lived her married life in St. Louis. The article mentions that Miss Fannie Smith was visiting H.A. Aldrich. Fannie is Mary and J. Bailey's daughter b. 1872 and married in 1894 so that might help date this article. If you have any connection to these people please let me know. The corner was torn so some of the words were missing but you can fill in the idea. Bt the way, Fannie is white so the beginning of this story is a little misleading.
COLLISION ON THE CLOVER LEAF
About 75 Negra people went to Charleston to attend the Fair. On the return the train broke in two parts while coming down grade. One ran ahead considerable distance before the break was discovered, then started back and the two divisions ran together. Charley Richmond and Ed Dow were on the platform and each fell through a window, regardless of the expense, but were not hurt. Miss Fannie Smith of St. Louis, who was visiting at H.A. Aldrich's, was hurt, her arm being injured. Miss Mary White was bruised condiderable and so frightened that she fainted and was unconcious when the train reached .......
and had to be carried home. She has been very sick all week.
