MCNAUGHTON history My great, great, great, great, grandfather was a John MCNAUGHTON. He had at least 1 son called John MCNAUGHTON. My great, great, great, grandfather was John MCNAUGHTON born circa 1803 in ?, Scotland. He married Janet CHALMERS on the 20th November 1829 at Moneydie, Perthshire, Scotland. They had (as far as I know) 2 sons and 1 daughter. Daniel MCNAUGHTON was born on 23rd April 1832 at Auchtergaven, Scotland, Robina MCNAUGHTON was born on 30th November 1832 at either Kilspindie or Lonforgan, Perthshire and David MCNAUGHTON. (see below). Robina later married James CLARK on the 4th December 1852 at Monikie, Angus, Scotland. They had 5 sons and 3 daughters, and she died in 1914 at Blairgowrie aged 82. My great, great grandfather - David McNaughton was born 9th May 1834 in Auchtergaven, Scotland. He married Jane Dow on the 13th Jan 1852 at Bankfoot Church in Auchtergaven. Jane was the daughter of William DOW (1786-1865) and Janet GRAHAM (1792-1867). David and Jane had 9 children all born in Perthshire, Scotland at either Dull or Logierait. The children were called : William MCNAUGHTON John MCNAUGHTON Douglas Graham MCNAUGHTON James MCNAUGHTON David MCNAUGHTON (my great, grandfather) Alexander MCNAUGHTON Janet MCNAUGHTON Mary Anne MCNAUGHTON Margaret MCNAUGHTON who was born in Logierait in 1870. In 1871, the family was living at Balmuick, Comrie, and Perth. Jane was aged 40 and David was aged 36 and working as a Gamekeeper. William the eldest son was absent, and so was John who I believe was working as a farm servant at Braincroft Farmhouse, Monzivaird and Strowan aged 15. Therefore, sometime after 1872 - part of the family moved to Dolwyddelan in North Wales, and settled at Rhiw Goch Bach, where some of the men worked as gamekeepers. The railway in the village of Dolwyddelan was completed in 1874. I know from the census that they were definitely there by 1881. David MCNAUGHTON (senior) was aged 47 - gamekeeper Jane Dow was aged 50 James MCNAUGHTON was aged 21. He later married Mary Annie in Hartley, and they settled at Penaeldroch, Dolwyddelan where James worked as a gamekeeper. They had two daughters Jane Dow born in 1884 but sadly died at the age of 5 years and was buried at Dolwyddelan and Mary Eleanor who was born in 1886. David MCNAUGHTON (my great grandfather) was aged 19. He was born at 0330 on the 20th January 1862 at Middleton of Fonab, Logierat, Perthshire. He later met Elizabeth Evans from Trawsfynydd in North Wales, and they were married on the 5th May 1884. They had 14 children, one of which was Marnine Grey which later became my grandmother. Sadly she died of TB at the age of 27, 6 months after giving birth to my mother Elizabeth May (Betty Griffiths). Alexander MCNAUGHTON was aged 17 Mary Anne MCNAUGHTON was aged 12 Margaret MCNAUGHTON aged 11 On the 9th March 1877, the oldest son William MCNAUGHTON married Margaret SHARP (daughter of James SHARP and Agnes KENNEDY) at High Burnside, Ayrshire. They had a son James MCNAUGHTON who was born in Dumfriesshire in 1879, before the family moved to North Wales (circa 1880), where another son was born David William in December 1880 (was aged 4 months when the census was made in 1881). They settled at a village called Penmachno (over the mountain to Dolwyddelan) William was aged 26 or 28, and Margaret was 29. and lived at Dylasa Cottage. They had a daughter in 1882, again at Penmachno and she was called Jane Dow MCNAUGHTON. Janet MCNAUGHTON remained up in Scotland, and was working as a domestic servant in 1883. On the 24th June 1883, she had an illegitimate son called James MCNAUGHTON at Methven, and he later went to live with his grandparents at Milton, Dull. There was no mention of John MCNAUGHTON or Douglas Graham MCNAUGHTON and I presume that they either stayed on up in Perthshire, or moved away to work, or sadly died. Shortly after moving to North Wales, Jane Dow MCNAUGHTON (the mother) became ill, and most of the family returned to Scotland. Sadly, on the 4th March 1885, at 2.30am, Jane Dow passed away aged 52 and living at Milton of Fricastle, Dull, Tenandry, Perth. She died of a Gastric Ulcer. She was buried with her parents (William DOW and Janet GRAHAM) at Auchtergaven, Perth. William and Margaret then moved back to Ayrshire with the family, and Agnes was born in 1885, Jessie in 1887 (in Perthshire), Helen in 1889, William in 1891, and Douglas at Blair in Ayrshire in 1893. The family was living at Old Mill Road, Kilmarnock in the 1901 Census, and William was aged 47/49 and working as a Joiner Labourer. Margaret was 49. Margaret MCNAUGHTON (b1870) also moved back to Dull, and was a table maid at Bonsfield House, Tenandry, Dull in 1891 Census. On the 13th December 1890, David MCNAUGHTON married again - Isabella KENNEDY (daughter of Duncan and Isabella KENNEDY) at The Turf Tavern, Perth! He was living at Milton of Fricath, and then moved to Moulin, Dull where he they were living in 1891. (with Janets illegitimate son James). David sadly died aged 62 on the 26 September 1896, at East Hough Lodge, Logierat. David MCNAUGHTON (b 1862) and Elizabeth MCNAUGHTON stayed on at Dolwyddelan. They were my great grandparents. Details of their children follows : John Alexander (known as Jack) born at Bwlch farm, Dolwyddelan in 1884. He married Mary, and had 3 children Brynley, Hilda and Arthur. He died aged 73 in 1957. David William born in 1886 and died aged 27 after falling on his gun. Jane Dow born in 1888. She married twice and had one son Dei. She later adopted my mother, and died aged 91 in 1979. Douglas Graham was born in Lledr Cottage, Dolwyddelan in 1896. He died at War in 1922 aged 25 years. Robert Barbour was born at Hyfrydle Cottage, Pont y Pant, Dolwyddelan in 1898. He married Harriet Hughes and had 3 daughters Linda, Joyce and Dorothy. He died aged 85 in 1984. Jessie Anne was born at Cae Gwyn, Dolwyddelan in 1900. She married Thomas Roberts and had 6 children.
