Deans of Dakota Territory, mid to late 1800s

I have found Deans in a 1900 census for Roxand Twp., Eaton County, Michigan and shown are births of Dean children of two different Dean families born in South Dakota (then still a part of Dakota Territory) and wonder how they connect.

(1) 274 - 276: Hiram A. Dean for whom I still have no parents, md. Clarissa Hilliker and they had 3 children born in South Dakota: Leroy, Earl, Charles, 1884 - 1889.

(2) 254 - 256: Charles Hilliker with a wife Anna and her daughters, his step-daughters, Dean: Lerna, (looks like Leama but I know that name is a long standing Moss name, Lerna and is always butchered); Gladys; "Deabie"; Bessie, all born 1891 - 1898 in "South Dacota".

So: how do these Deans connect; which Dean was Anna married to before she married Charles Hilliker?
