CROSBY Farms in 1800's Arlington, MA (Josiah and John)

Hello,

I've been e-mailing with members of the Arlington, MA, Historical Society,
and have found out there was a second "CROSBY Farm" in the town. And,
this farm was also a very important farm for developing vegetables.
People on this farm developed the "Crosby Beet," I've read.

A little investigating showed that the original farmer was Josiah CROSBY,
and he was born ~1805. I did a little on-line checking and found at
least 3 Josiah CROSBY's in New England all born around 1800. But, I'm not
finding the parents of this man in Arlington. I was wondering if anyone
has researched him.

I just rechecked and the 1880 census still has Josiah living in Arlington at
Age 75. His wife, Alice, is with him at Age 57. I think I read that
she might have been Alice ROSS. There were 5 adult children living with
them, and and think there were older children - as 3 sons took over the
farm, including Walter CROSBY.

(According to www.familysearch.org there were at least 6 Josiah CROSBY's
born in NH during the 1790's, but only 2 or 3 born in MA ~1803. Possibly
in Charlestown, or down the Cape.)

Oh, I just remembered to check for Walter CROSBY in the 1880 census and he
is listed there in Arlington at Age 36. He is listed with his wife,
Jessie. (no children mentioned)

.. I just checked the 1800 census and there was a Josiah CROSBY in
Billerica, and he was one of 11 CROSBY households in that town at that time.
And, there was a Josiah, the 2nd, there. The 1810 census has Josiah and
Josiah, Jr., there. In 1820 only one Josiah in Middlesex County
(Billerica).

Oh, here he is. In 1860 Josiah CROSBY was living in West Cambridge
(former name for Arlington). His wife, Alice, was with him.

CROSBY, JOSIAH (1860 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, CAMBRIDGE
Age: 54, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: MA
Series: M653 Roll: 511 Page: 751

In this census he is listed as having 10 children, including 5 sons.
(All born in MA)

There is another Josiah CROSBY, slightly younger, living in the next town,
Somerville, in 1860. He was born in NH.

The 1870 census has them listed with 8 of their children with them. This
page says that the wife, Alice, was born in Maine.

I checked the "Simon CROSBY book" yesterday, and it only has a brief mention
of the Josiah CROSBY in 1700's Billerica, with no additional information on
him.

I guess there is the possibility that the Josiah in 1800's West Cambridge /
Arlington was a descendant of the Josiah in 1700's Billerica.

Thank you for your time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. The John CROSBY Farm on Mystic St. in Arlington, and the Josiah
CROSBY on Lake St. in Arlington are both listed as large "Market Farms."

Putting my thoughts together at 5 am, John is descended from the Simon
CROSBY of 1600's Billerica family - through his son, Joseph, then down to
William. What are the chances that the Josiah in Arlington is descended
from through Simon's son, Josiah?

(Making the 2 CROSBY men in 1800's Arlington "distantly related" ??)

(I'm pretty sure I've posted before that the John CROSBY mentioned here was the brother of my ancestor, Mrs. Eliza (CROSBY) HUTCHINSON. Jacob and Eliza lived on the large HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester, MA. They were up the street from each other and possibly in the 1700's bordered on each other.)

(Jacob is descended from Simeon and Lydia (FROST) CROSBY who married in Cambridge, MA, and was descended from the Billerica families.)
