Hello. I treated myself to a new, picture book of Arlington, MA, and its history. It has pictures of buildings "then and now." In the book, there were 2 pictures I was particulary interested in: The hothouses in the vintage image were among several located at the CROSBY Farm, which was the last of the large market gardens to surrender to suburban development. Famous for its "Arlington Pure White" variety of celery, the Crosbys sold out in two waves in the 1930's and 1950's. The modern view shows the Bishop Elementary School, which opened in 1950 on the former farmland. It was the firt school to serve the Mysticside section since its annexation from Charlestown over 100 years earlier. and This Greek Revival house at 298 Mystic Street once belonged to John S. Crosby, whose family operated an extensive market garden, along with henhouses, a piggery, and a retail farm stand. Generations of Crosbys resided here until the last of the farm was sold for development in the 1950s and the family moved its agriculturl operations to Maine. Once bucolic, Mystic Street toy is busy Route 3, and the Crosby house must now seek quiet behind a tall fence. I checked Census data and found a John CROSBY in West Cambridge (which became Arlington) in 1820. In 1860 there was a John S. CROSBY in Belmont (next town). In 1870 John S. CROSBY was in Arlington, and he was there in 1888, and in 1900 and 1910. He probably died between between 1910 and 1920 while in his 80's. I was just wondering who this John S. CROSBY's parents were and whether anyone is studying him. I am descended from John CROSBY, b1797, d1854, through one of his daughters. This John is the only child of Simeon CROSBY and Lydia Harrington FROST. I believe that Simeon is the son of Jessaniah CROSBY of Billerica, MA. SEE my other postings. Because my John CROSBY married in Arlington / West Cambridge, MA, in 1817. And, the above John S. CROSBY was in Arlington / West Cambridge from at least 1860, I am very curious whether the two men are related. Betty (near Lowell, MA) My John CROSBY married Mary BUCNAM.
