On 11 Sep 1866, Kentucky, Samuel married Miss Lizzie Lanier, daughter of Lloyd A. and Amanda (Brown) Lanier, natives respectively of Alabama and Kentucky. Cowan children: Addie L. (Mrs. John Murphy, Bozeman, MT), Lulu Lee (Mrs. Frank Nelson, Bozeman, MT), William F., Luke Allen, Julian Lanier.
