My personal opinion is that no one should participate in a DNA study for which the results are kept secret from the public. It is a diservice to all Cobb descendents. There is a public y-DNA study at Family Tree DNA and there is a "nonpublic" DNA study at another site. My observation is that when someone participates in a "nonpublic" study, they are only helping someone to write a book for their own profit.
