I am in the process of gathering original source documentation related to Cyrus Andrus and Asemeth/Asenath Calkins and daughter Chloe, and would appreciate any citations or other information that anyone is willing to share as to birth, death, marriage, probate, deeds, etc. for these individuals. I am happy to share whatever I find. Also, does anyone have photos of Cyrus and Asemeth’s gravestones in Leroy Cemetery, in Leroy, Bradford County, PA? Cyrus and Asemeth lived in Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Cyrus was born 17 Mar 1780 in Waterbury, CT. His parents were Elihu Andrus and Sarah Brown. I descend from Chloe Maria Andrus, b. 10 April 1820 in New York (date per family bible record). She married Robert Metteer b. 12 May 1816 in New York (bible record; death certificate). They married 16 Feb 1840 (bible record), probably in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

Some researchers show that Cyrus’ wife Asemeth Calkins was born 20 Jan 1788 in Tinmouth, VT, while others show her birth place as Sharon, CT. I have not found the source record yet for either birth or baptism date or place. Her parents are shown as Joseph Calkins and Deborah Crippen, but I still am searching for proof of this.

According to various researchers, Cyrus and Asemeth Andrus had a daughter Chloe. This undoubtedly is the same Chloe who married Robert Metteer. I have a lot of circumstantial evidence proving this relationship, but need to find the primary source records, if possible. Apparently, an Andrus genealogy (which I am trying to locate) shows Cyrus’ daughter Chloe’s husband as Robert Matthews/Matier.

Cyrus and Asemeth had a son, Thomas C. Andrus who married Eliza Beardsley, and a daughter Asenath, who married John Cole. Both Thomas Andrus and Asenath Cole are mentioned in a diary entry that Robert Metteer made upon the death of his wife Chloe. Chloe died 29 Feb 1888 in Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska. Census records for 1850, 1860, and 1870 show that Chloe was born in New York. This is consistent with census showing Cyrus Andrus in Catharine, Tioga County, NY in 1820 (the same year that Chloe was born). Robert Metteer died 24 Aug 1908 in Elmwood, Cass County, NE (death record).

Cyrus Andrews b. ca 1780 is in the household of Robert and Chloe Metteer in 1860 in Franklin, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The census entry spells the name “Maters,” and ancestry.com has the name indexed as “Waters.” Cyrus and Asemeth (Sena) are listed in the household of son Thomas Andrus in 1850 in Canton Township, Bradford County, PA.

Census for Chloe Andrus and Robert Metteer:
1840: Granville, Bradford County, PA, listed as “Robert Metteer”
1850: Granville, Bradford County, PA, listed as “Meteer”
1860: Franklin Township, Bradford County, PA, listed as “Maters” indexed as “Waters”
1870: Stone Creek Precinct, Cass County, NE, listed as “Robt Martin”, Chloe listed as “Clara”
1880: Plattsmouth, Cass County, NE, listed as “Metteer”
1900: Robert in household of daughter Sarah who m. Peter Eveland

Census for Cyrus Andrus and Asemath Calkins
1810: Tinmouth, Rutland County, VT, “Cyrus Andrus”
1820: Catharine, Tioga County, NY, listed as Cyrus “Andrews”
1830: ?
1840: Canton, Bradford County, PA, “Cyrus Andrus”
1850: Canton, Bradford County, PA, in household of Thomas Andrus
1860: Cyrus in household of Robert Maters (Metteer), Franklin, Bradford County, PA

Any corrections to the above information would be most welcome. Thank you.

Sylvia
