Joseph Black, according to his Civil War pension records, was born in Ohio. He served in the First Regiment of the Oregon Infantry Volunteers and was discharged from Fort Vancouver, Washington, in January 1866.
He married Eveline Tharp in 1873 in Benton County, Oregon.
They had five children:
William Edgar Black
George R. Black
Pearl A. Black
Benjamin Black
Sadie A. Black
